Pyramids, Churches & Mosques

The history of Egypt begins about 5000 years ago when the legendary pharaoh Menes succeed to unite Upper and Lower Egypt in a single kingdom. And since then, the land of the Nile had many rulers . One of the first was King Aha , who succeeded to put all Egypt under his control and to put a start point for the time of the pharaohs and their pyramids, gods , mummies and temples.

The Pharaohs ruled for nearly 2500 years until the year 332 when Alexander the Great made Egypt a part of his Greek Empire. But after 362 years later , the Romans took power in Egypt .

At about the same time Jesus was born in Bethlehem , and because he was chased by the King Herod , he fled with his parents Mary and Joseph to Egypt. Shortly thereafter, Saint Mark (the author of one of the four Gospels in the Bible) came to Egypt and founded the Coptic Church .

In 642 Egypt was finally conquered by Amr ibn al-As on behalf of the Prophet Mohammed and become part of the Islamic empire . Thus, to the temples and churches were also a variety of large and small mosques added , which is why Cairo also referred to as the “city of a thousand minarets ” ( ” minarets ” are the towers of the mosques ) .

Sounds pretty complete , is not it ? But together with your tour guide you will be kept busy for a whole week learning even more of the exciting history of Egypt and becoming the new expert adventurer of the Nile .
