With its dramatic history and fascinating environment, Siwa has been a hidden treasures in the dunes of the Great Sand Sea for centuries. Inhabited since the 10th millennium BC, the history of its some 23.000 people, mostly ethnic Berbers, extends far beyond even the Pharaonic history!
Maybe the most remarkable event in its history was the visit of Alexander the Great to the oracle temple of Amoun which Herodotus called “Fountain of the Sun”. When Alexander sought guidance from it, the oracle supposedly confirmed him as both a divine personage and the legitimate Pharaoh of Egypt!
But Egypt’s most famous oasis has far more to offer than only the remains of Amoun’s temple. Besides its spectacular landscape which is characterized by sharp contrasts between the rich green of the oasis and the harsh barren desert, Siwa invites you to the ancient fortress of Shali Gali (“remote city”), the Gebel el-Mawta (the “Mountain of the Dead”), the Roman-era necropolis with dozens of rock-cut tombs and the palm-fringed peninsula in the saltwater lake, Fatnas Island.

Afterwards, visit the ruins of the other temple of Amoun, the temple of Umm Ubeida and let your guide revive the interesting rituals of the oracle. Later on, visit Gabal el-Mawta, the “Mountain of the Dead” with dozens of rock-cut Roman tombs. If you like, climb the mountain and enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the giant oasis of Siwa (about 80km/50mi in length and 20km/12mi in wide!).

Then drive to the extraordinary Fortress of Shali, once remarkable five stories high. The building, almost entirely made from salt and mud, hosted up to 5.000 people and was inhabited until 1944 when the majority of the population moved to the modern city of Siwa.
Admire both the fragility and the strength of the unmatched architecture while you walk through the narrow alleys.
Afterwards, drive to Fatnas, a small island beautifully situated in the salty Siwan lake, theBirket Siwa – a perfect stop for laying back and enjoying a dip in the lake.
An Expedition to the Great Sand Sea
After breakfast, take your 4×4 car and drive to Bir Wahed, a fresh water lake which was created in 1967 when a Russian oil company dug for oil in the area. But instead of the desired “liquid oil” they found water which since then gathers in the middle of the fascinating sand dunes. If you like, enjoy a dip in this semi-natural pool.
Later on, climb over the sand dunes to reach one of the manynatural jacuzzi made my sulphuric springs and enjoy the warm water while watching the sunset over the Great Sand Sea. In the meantime, your driver will set up your ITERU tents for the night and prepare dinner.
