Christmas Spirit

Start the new year with a special encounter with the Coptic faith and share the Christmas Spirit! This tour invites you to spend January, 7th – the Coptic day of Christmas – together with the young girls and boys in the Orphanage of St. Mary in Beni Suef and to help in making their Christmas celebration a one to remember.

Furthermore, get in touch with the local Coptic communities in Cairo and Beni Suef and share in their preparation for the celebration of the birth of Christ. Beyond this, dig deep into the Coptic history and traditions and learn about the long history of Christianity by the Nile.

Please note: This tour is offered every year from January, 3rd to January, 9th. Yet, as in all our tours, you are welcome to alter the itinerary according to your individual interestes and travel dates.

Itinerary

Day 1: January, 3rd
Welcome to Egypt

Upon arrival at Cairo International Airport our representative will meet and assist you with passport control, customs formalities and handling your luggage. And be transferred to your hotel.

Day 2: January, 4th
Coptic Cairo, the Garbage City

In the morning drive to the Coptic quarter of Cairo where you will visit some of the oldest Churches in the city and learn about Christianity in Egypt through the age until the present time. First, visit St. Sergius and Bacchus Church (also known as “Abu Serga”, 4th century). Once inside, your guide will introduce you to the lively Coptic traditions on the flight of the Holy Family to Egypt (cf. Mt 2,13-14)

Second, visit St. Virgin Mary’s Coptic Orthodox Church, widely known as the Hanging Church. Finally, proceed to Ben Ezra Synagogue (also known as “el-Geniza Synagogue”), which is not only the oldest and most famous synagogue in Cairo but one of the oldest Coptic churches in the country as well.

After lunch, drive through the unique Garbage City of Cairo to visit the church of St. Simon the Tanner. Here you will have the chance to spread the Christmas Spirit by visiting the small society for Garbage Collectors with majority of christians. In there, you will be introduced to many intiatives and NGOs working in the local society of garbage collectors.

Day 3: January, 5th
The Great Pyramids of Giza, al-Enaam House

Enjoy an extensive excursion to the Great Pyramids of Giza including the Solar Boat Museum, the Sphinx, the Valley Temple and an astonishing panoramic view of all three pyramids from the observation point.

And will go to have lunch in al-Enaam house (a Christian house that serve blind working and studying girls) where you can talk with them and have some ideas about their activities.

Afterwards, you will drive to the “Pharaonic Village” where you will sail through the compound seeing scenes from the daily life of Ancient Egyptians.

Day 4: January, 6th
The Egyptian Museum, Beni Suef

In the morning, visit the Egyptian Museum with its rich Pharaonic treasures from all epochs of the Pharaonic Era including those of Tutankhamen and the Royal Mummy Room.

After lunch, drive to the Egyptian country side in Beni Suef where you will meet with the nuns of Daughters of St. Mary to be introduced to their convent and activities. Afterwards, drive around the city and villages to get introduced to various of their intiatives such as the Female Circumcision Awarness Campaign, the orphanages for young women or the mentally handicapped facility.

Day 5: January, 7th
Share the Christmas Spirit with the Orphanage of St. Mary

In the Coptic tradition, Christmas is observed on what the Gregorian Calender counts as the 7th of January and this year, you are invited to share the Christmas Spirit with the young girls and boys in the Orphanage in St. Mary. Together with some young youth servants, you may share in arranging a feast party for the orphans and to help in marking their this year’s Christmas a special one to remember.

Day 6: January, 8th
Wadi el-Natroun

From the 4th century onwards, Wadi el-Natrun is considered to be one of the most sacred sites in Coptic Christianity. Once, hundreds of monasteries were erected here of which only four remain; three of them you will visit. Typically, a monk of the respective monastery will be your guide and provide you with a rich insight into daily monastic life and the monasteries’ traditions.

In the Syrian Monastery you will especially study the numerous very rich and colorful wall paintings and hear about the monastery’s foundation and its changing history. Afterwards, proceed to the Monastery of St. Pishoy and discover the monastery’s complex including the Pishoy’s basilica, the keep (tower), old monk’s cells and the refectory. Finally, visit Baramus Monastery, the oldest of the four existing monasteries in Wadi el-Natrun.

In all places you will have time to walk around in silent meditation and to follow your own thoughts while experiencing the spiritual atmosphere still emanating from the hundreds of years old walls. Also you may share your experiences about the place with other visitors or the monks.

Day 6: January, 9th
Departure Day

According to your flight time, private transfer to Cairo Airport for your return flight.
